"an atmospheric experience inspired by a quarry"
With a project brief of designing a bath house located deep in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the project looked to take advantage of the natural granite just below the surface. To do so, the structure carves a space into the mountain while allowing rock to protrude into the interior and blur the lines between man-made intervention and natural environment, reminiscent of a quarry. However, with this typology, arose the challenge of directing natural light in, a key element of the bath house experience. To achieve this, three arms extend out to the landscape, framing scenic views, drawing in light, and providing contrast to the cavernous interior.
